Argus Cycle Tour

Hallo daar,

What an Argus!!! Race from Hell, as more commonly referred to!

While waiting to start we all joked about being blown from our bikes, not knowing that this would indeed happen to most of us during the race.

Very, very dificult conditions with gale force winds for the 1st 50 km’s. We were thinking it would be easier once we turned at Smitswinkel, but surprise, surprise. No such luck..
During the latter part of the race, on the “supposedly” downhills after Chappies & Suikerbossie, we actually had to get off our bikes in order not to be physically lifted of our bikes – absolutely no chance of cycling in such atrocious conditions. In Simonstown the sand from the beach was blown all over the road. It felt as if you were in a furnace being sandblasted.

I'm not surprised at all that +- 10 000 cyclists chose not to start the race at all.

Anyway, just glad we made it to the finish in one peice – for this I have to thank Yvette (my daughter) who waited for me on various occasions and encouraged me all the way. What an inspiration she was!!!

Will start training for the Koppie next week – Speak to you all later.

Regards to everybody.
Wally
